Strategic Partnerships

The Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism is a voluntary, multi-stakeholder initiative designed to help its members develop sustainable tourism policy and programmes, and pursue joint projects. The Partnership is distinguished by several unique characteristics:

• Holistic approach: partnerships, projects and policy-making efforts to address the myriad of challenges faced by the tourism industry

• In-depth expertise: based on the experience and accomplishments of the International Task Force on Sustainable Tourism Development (ITF-STD) and Partnership members

• Global network of highly committed stakeholders: national governments, destination representatives, inter-governmental organizations, international development agencies, non-governmental organizations, international business organizations, companies, and civil society organizations work together to develop joint projects to promote sustainability and influence tourism policy

• Focus on concrete outcomes: adapting, replicating and scaling-up the best practices in sustainable tourism; publicizing the benefits of sustainable practices in tourism

• Win-win initiatives that deliver economic, social and environmental benefits to all members

Examples of Strategic Partnerships

Public Partnerships

Our partners want to take responsibility for developing their own long-term tourism strategies and achieving development goals. We support them by offering demand-driven, tailor-made and effective services for planning and implementing sustainable tourism policies and projects. We apply a holistic and value-based approach to ensure the participation of all stakeholders. We take into account the political, economic, social and ecological dimensions of the issue as we support our partners as they develop far-reaching solutions at the local, regional, national and international levels. We advise our members on drawing up plans and strategies, identify experts in partner countries, and promote networking and dialogue among actors at all levels. One key component of the package is capacity building for partner-country experts. We offer our members diverse opportunities to use the contacts they have made. These efforts increase efficiency by reducing waste and duplication. They also improve the final results by combining strengths, pooling resources and replicating best practices.
